Types of Covid tests

Find out about the different types of tests that screen for Covid

PCR

Tests for active infection. These are carried out by taking a sample using a swab inserted into the nostrils and/or the throat. Key features:

• Detects infection in the early days. Amplifies the virus’s genetic material even when present in small quantities.

• High sensitivity for detecting the virus.

 

Antigen test

Tests for active infection. These are carried out by taking a sample using a swab inserted into the nostrils and/or the throat. Key features:

• Detects the infection for a limited time after the onset of symptoms.

• Low complexity and cost.

• The chosen test must meet WHO criteria.

• Results available in about 15-20 minutes.

 

Antibody screening tests:

These are not considered tests for active infection. They indicate serological status and may be useful for population studies or in very specific clinical situations.
