Kyoto Declaration of the Geneva Association
The International Association for the Study of Insurance Economics, more commonly known as the Geneva Association, identifies fundamental trends and strategic issues where insurance plays a substantial role or which influence the insurance sector.
The AXA Group is one of the signatories of the Geneva's Association Kyoto Declaration, published in 2009. This declaration represents a significant commitment by the world's leading insurers, reflecting their concern about climate change and its economic and social consequences.
Thus, the insurance sector commits to playing a key role and making significant efforts to address climate risk. In particular, the leaders of the world's largest insurance companies commit to a series of key actions involving customers, policymakers, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) and the insurance sector. Such efforts include:
- Improved research capacity.
- Innovative solutions through the funding of relevant research and providing tools that bring these solutions to fruition.
- Development of products aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the design of insurance products that support low-carbon energy projects, and further research into related initiatives.
- Help policymakers counteract climate risk through active cooperation, for example in the implementation of building codes.
- Communicate climate risk to customers, as well as inform them of the strategies to mitigate such risk and quantify the financial benefits of such strategies.
This declaration sets out the insurance sector's stance and capabilities with respect to the services and solutions aimed at mitigating climate risk. It also states that its actions will be carried out in conjunction with stakeholders, within the climate adaptation framework.
