Observatory on longevity

The AXA Foundation, in collaboration with Foro Next, organizes discussion forums on issues of social importance that affect the public: rural Spain, the effects of depopulation, and the resulting economic and socio-demographic challenges they pose.

For the fourth consecutive year, the AXA Foundation has been working with Foro Next on “Evolución de la percepción de los avances en la España Rural” (Evolving perceptions on progress in rural Spain). The findings of the study conducted by Foro Next in collaboration with the AXA Foundation on this topic were presented to the Spanish Senate at the end of May 2024, thereby gaining institutional recognition that has strengthened the initiative's position in the debate on possible solutions in the revitalization of rural Spain.

Presentation to the Senate

Based on more than 600 interviews with leaders from rural Spain--local councillors, organizational leaders, journalists, entrepreneurs, business professionals, and young people--the study shows that progress in rural areas is still in its early stages, or at least perceived as such. So far, the main positive developments since last year have been increased media attention to the issue and greater public awareness. However, challenges remain, including limited support from banking institutions, the ongoing decline of healthcare services and pharmacies, and difficulties in providing education in these areas.
Despite all these issues, and after decades of neglect, rural Spain now has a significant opportunity for revitalization. There is broad--almost unanimous--agreement that rural areas play an essential role in combating climate change and that the green transition also represents an opportunity for these regions. There is also strong consensus that
depopulation contributes to an increased risk in wildfires. Forests are of great value; they generate positive externalities such as carbon absorption, helping to mitigate climate change and regulate water cycles, benefits which serve society as a whole.

Debate

To gain a deeper understanding and assess the study findings, Foro Next and the AXA Foundation organized a debate moderated by journalist and chair of Next Educación, Manuel Campo Vidal; Luis Sáez de Jáuregui, vice-chair of the AXA Foundation; Luis Fernando García Nicolás, chair of FemEmbalses; and Asun Cámara, coordinator of Juntos por los Bosques.
