I’ve never skied before… where do I start?
If you’ve never been on skis before, but feel the urge every time you see snow, it might be time to take the plunge and learn to ski or try your hand at snowboarding. Let’s answer the typical questions that beginners often ask:
Can a friend teach me, or is it better to book lessons?
It’s always advisable to book ski lessons with the local ski school, as the instructors are best qualified to teach you proper techniques. What’s more, if you opt for group lessons, you’ll meet fellow beginners, making your class time far more enjoyable.
Should I bring my own equipment from the very start?
It isn’t necessary. In fact, if it’s your first time and you’re not yet sure whether you’ll enjoy the sport or not, hiring your gear from the resort's specialist shops is the better choice. You can hire everything from ski clothing (overalls, gloves, or trousers and a jacket) to essential kit (helmet, boots, skis, poles and snowboards).
I’ve already learnt the basics. Can I ski on any slope?
No, everyone should only ski on slopes suited to their ability. In other words, if you’re a beginner, green runs (or blue runs at most) are ideal. Skiing down a red run without the necessary skills could lead to an accident.
Is it advisable to take out ski insurance?
Yes, as it will cover you for any unforeseen incidents on the slopes, whether you sustain an injury or only need assistance. You can find out more about AXA’s ski insurance on our website.
So now you know: take the plunge and enjoy winter sports with confidence, while taking sensible precautions according to your skill level. You’re sure to get hooked!
